Although a little more advanced than a normal moneyline or spread bet, NFL Teaser Betting is fairly popular at sportsbooks during the NFL season. Teaser bets account for over 15% of sportsbooks handles for NFL betting, and is continuously becoming more popular.

• NFL Teaser Odds When betting NFL teasers, the most common football teaser varieties are selecting two or three teams and teasing NFL lines by 6, 6.5 or 7 points. As an example of a football betting teaser, let’s say you like Pittsburgh -4.0 and Los Angeles +6.0, but are worried that the Steelers might only win by a field goal or the Chargers.

Rule 1: Cross Key Numbers. I personally consider 3, 4, 6, 7, 10 and 14 key teaser numbers. Those are the six most common margins of victory in the NFL. However, 3 and 7 are kings since games end on those two numbers at a significantly higher clip than the rest. Rather than betting these straight at -110 or -105, or putting them in a standard parlay, or standard teaser, you can put them in what many sites call a special, monster, or sweetheart teaser. If you do so, you’ll have a single bet of: Jets +11, Ravens -1.5, Patriots +7.5; each spread has been moved 10 points.

NFL teaser betting is more common with intermediate or advanced bettors, but it isn’t a hard concept to understand – I will explain how NFL teasers work below.

What is a NFL Teaser Bet?

A teaser bet is a group of straight bets (two or more) combined into one bet, where each individual line has been shifted to your favour by the number of points of the teaser.

There are three main NFL teasers – 6, 6.5 and 7 point teasers.

In a 6 point NFL teaser the line would be shifted by 6 points in the favour of the bettors play. For example if you wanted to take the Ravens -8, it would be converted into Ravens -2 within a teaser bet. The spread was shifted 6 points (from 8 points down to 2 points). Another example would be if you wanted to play the Chiefs -2.5. In a 6 point teaser the -2.5 line would be changed to Chiefs +3.5.

The same rule is applied for 6.5 and 7 point NFL teasers, except, of course, the line is shifted by either 6.5 or 7 points instead of the 6 points shown in the example above. NFL teaser bets must include two or more bets “parlayed” (cannot do single teaser bets).

NFL Teaser Example

Here is what a two team 6.5 point NFL teaser bet would look like:

Your selections: Pittsburgh Steelers +3 and Dallas Cowboys -4.5

In a 6.5 point teaser these would then be changed to: Steelers +9.5 and Cowboys -2

In order for you to win the teaser bet both incomes would have to be correct. If one selection was a push the bet is often refunded, but some sportsbooks will count it as a loss if the other selection lost (check your sportsbooks‘ rules).

Below is another example of a teaser bet that I recently placed and won. I teased the Vikings and Eagles from +2.5 up to +8.5 in a 2 team 6 point teaser.

Every sportsbook will have their own payouts and rules for teaser bets. Our favorite sportsbook for getting the best NFL odds is 5Dimes.eu. Of course the more points you use on the teaser the lower the payout will be, and the more teams you include in the teaser bet the higher the payout will be.

Parlays and teasers are the two most popular exotic sports bets. Both of these sports wager types require players to include at least two outcomes. For teasers, these can include point spreads and totals. Parlays can use spreads, totals, and money lines. Parlays may include picks across multiple sports, while all bets on a teaser must be on the same sport.

Teaser Bet

A standard parlay takes a point spread, total, or money line right off the board. Parlays can contain anywhere from two to ten outcomes. Each outcome must win or tie to keep the parlay alive. Any loss will kill the card and make it lose. A tie or push will drop and lower the payout by one outcome. For example, a four-team parlay that has three wins and a tie would be paid as a three-teamer. This rule does not apply to parlay cards that specifically state that ties win or lose.

Standard Point Spread and Total Payouts

The following parlay card payouts refer to point spreads and totals in football and basketball. Some smaller Las Vegas and large, safe online books offer slightly better odds. In general, Jerry’s Nugget is the best place to make parlay bets in Las Vegas.

Money line parlay payouts that can be made on any sport are determined by taking multiplying the house edge on each individual bet. This is also done when combining money lines with point spreads or totals.

Ties Lose Parlay Cards

Ties lose parlay cards have higher payouts than traditional parlays. These are much more difficult to hit because the sports book will intentionally put numbers in key places, like 3 and 7 for football. A game that lands on one of those numbers will kill all parlay cards that picked it on both sides.

Some ties lose parlay cards will contain only primetime games. These will offer just the night game point spreads and totals with a variety of prop bets. The props include number of fumbles, interceptions, field goals, and touchdowns. These numbers will nearly always be even so that anyone that takes either side of the bet loses the entire card if the prop bet pushes.

Ties Win and Half Point Parlay Cards

More desirable cards are called ties win or half point. Both have the same concept. Neither card can be lowered or graded a loser due to a push. On ties win cards, look for football games with spreads of 3 and 7. On half point parlay cards, check for games that had spreads on 3 and 7 and see which way the line moved a half point. Take the other side that gets the free hook, another way to describe a half point.
